If ever there was proof that the mainstream media pick and choose what to report and how to report it, the so-called “yellow vest movement” is it.
During the past year and more, thousands of protesters in yellow vests have been clashing with police all across France, as unrest among the French population increases as time goes on. The yellow vest movement has spread to other countries also and doesn’t look like it’s going to go away any time soon.
It’s important to note that the yellow vest movement is a grassroots movement with no obvious hierarchy or organisation. Therefore, demands made vary considerably although there is a consensus among most around areas involving human rights and economic fairness. There are also odd sideshows involving more extreme views and attempts by different groups and individuals to co-opt the movement to their advantage. In the UK for example, supporters of Brexit wore yellow vests to protest in London during the debates on the subject. But the yellow vest movement isn’t about any single issue and Brexit has been an extremely divisive topic in the UK.
While the demands vary considerably, the term that fits most to describe the yellow vest movement is “anti-establishment”. The consensus is that the status quo is no longer viable. Trust in the systems that govern and control are at an all-time low. Joe and Jane Blogs have been lied to, deceived and screwed over once too often and now they’re saying so – loudly.
While the majority of protesters have made their protest a peaceful one, there is the minority who don’t know how to behave and the media have largely limited their coverage to those exceptions, choosing to ignore the many reports of police brutality. During many of the Saturdays of demonstration, the police have enjoyed themselves at the expense of protesters with the use of riot guns, rubber bullets, water cannon and tear gas. One protester was left with serious head injuries after being hit on the back of the head. In what way was this demonstrator a danger to the officer in question, a plain-clothed officer who fired at his target from behind?
Much of the violence that has accompanied yellow vest demonstrations in France has been instigated by overenthusiastic police whether directed to do so or otherwise. Heavy-handed tactics by police threaten any hope of a peaceful conclusion as violence only escalates, providing the police with justification to use ever stronger tactics. This situation can escalate out of control with each new demonstration and with no warning.
Isn’t it strange though, that mainstream media is saying very little beyond the odd report about some violence in Paris? If you don’t do a search online, you won’t find much about this story looking at you when you open your browser. The television news channels are mostly ignoring it. You must go to alternative news sources to get any real information on the yellow vest protests, or you just won’t find anything out.
Why would they report on it? The mainstream media is an integral part of the very establishment being protested!
